Quick answer
If you hold an Indian passport and live abroad, the visa you use depends on where you live. Gulf (GCC) residents with a valid residence permit can usually use the Saudi tourist eVisa for GCC residents. Indians living in the UK, USA, Canada, Europe or Australia generally apply for an Umrah visa as Indian nationals, unless they hold a valid, used US, UK or Schengen visa that qualifies them for the tourist eVisa. Family members who hold foreign passports apply on their own passport's route, and everyone can still travel together.
Why this question confuses so many NRIs
Most online advice is written either for people applying from India or for citizens of Western countries. Indian passport holders abroad sit in between: your residence card matters in the Gulf, but usually not in the West. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons for wasted bookings.
Rules by where you live
UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain
- Use the GCC resident eVisa with your valid residence permit (Emirates ID, QID, civil ID, resident card or CPR).
- Your residence permit should stay valid for the whole trip, and ideally for three months after.
- You can fly in under three hours, or travel by road through land borders.
See our country guides for the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.
Living inside Saudi Arabia
Iqama holders do not need a visa. Book your Umrah permit in the Nusuk app. Read Umrah from inside Saudi Arabia.
UK, USA, Canada, Europe and Australia
- Residence status (PR, green card, work or study permit) does not by itself make an Indian passport eligible for the eVisa.
- If you hold a valid, used US, UK or Schengen visa, check eVisa eligibility on the official portal.
- Otherwise apply for an Umrah visa as an Indian national, through an authorised provider.
- Carry proof you can re-enter your country of residence — airlines often ask.

Should I apply from India or from where I live?
Apply based on where you will start the journey and which passport you travel on. If you fly to Saudi Arabia from Dubai, use your UAE residence route. If you visit family in India first and fly from Hyderabad or Kochi, you can apply as an Indian national — see our step-by-step India guide.
Families with mixed passports
Many NRI families include a parent on an Indian passport and children with British, American, Canadian or Australian passports. That is fine. Each person applies on their own passport's route, then you book the same flights and hotel. Women travelling without a mahram should read our women, children and seniors guide.
Documents checklist for NRIs
- Passport valid for at least six months from arrival
- Residence permit or visa of your country of residence (for Indian passport holders)
- Recent passport-style photo on a white background
- Confirmed hotel booking and return ticket
- Health insurance where required
- Vaccination records if asked (meningitis is often requested)
Full list: Umrah visa documents checklist.
Five mistakes we see from NRIs
- Assuming a green card or PR qualifies an Indian passport for the eVisa.
- A Gulf residence permit that expires during the trip.
- Applying on one passport and travelling on another.
- Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is issued.
- Planning dates inside the Hajj season, when tourist-visa Umrah is closed.
