Can You Perform Umrah on a Visit or Tourist Visa?
Quick answer
Yes. Holders of a valid Saudi tourist, visit or eligible transit visa may perform Umrah, provided they book an Umrah permit through the official Nusuk platform and observe the permit's date and time slot. A dedicated Umrah visa is not the only route into the Haram, but it remains the more predictable option for pilgrims whose entire trip is the pilgrimage.
Saudi Arabia separated the visa from the permit some years ago. The visa gets you into the country; the permit gets you into the Haram at a specific time. Once you understand that split, most of the confusion around this question disappears.
How the permit system works
- 01Enter on a valid visaA tourist, visit or eligible transit visa admits you to Saudi Arabia.
- 02Register on NusukCreate an account on the official Nusuk platform with your passport details.
- 03Book an Umrah permitSelect a date and time slot for your Umrah. Permits are capacity-managed, so popular slots fill early, especially in Ramadan.
- 04Attend at your slotPresent the permit when required. Performing Umrah outside a booked slot is not permitted.
Visit visa versus Umrah visa
- Umrah visa — designed for pilgrimage, requires Makkah and Madinah bookings with validated BRNs, includes mandatory medical insurance
- Tourist or visit visa — broader purpose, generally longer validity, requires a separate Umrah permit through Nusuk
- Transit visa — for eligible routings; permit rules and time available are tighter
Which route suits you
If the trip exists for the pilgrimage, the Umrah visa route is cleaner: accommodation and insurance are verified up front, and nothing about your stay depends on securing a permit slot after arrival.
If you are already visiting Saudi Arabia for family, business or tourism, the permit route avoids a second visa entirely.
Rules change — check before you commit
Permit eligibility, slot availability and Ramadan-period restrictions are revised regularly. Verify the current position before you book non-refundable travel, and ask us if you are unsure which route fits.
Frequently asked
Questions pilgrims ask about this
Short, direct answers to the questions we hear most often from Indian pilgrims.
Can I perform Umrah on a Saudi tourist visa?
Yes, with an Umrah permit booked through the official Nusuk platform for a specific date and time slot.
Can visit visa holders from the UAE perform Umrah?
Eligible visa holders may perform Umrah under the permit system. Eligibility depends on your nationality and visa type, so confirm your own case before travelling.
Can I perform Umrah on a transit visa?
Eligible transit visa holders may, subject to permit availability and the time your routing allows. It is tight, and it is not a route we recommend planning a pilgrimage around.
Is an Umrah permit the same as an Umrah visa?
No. The visa admits you to Saudi Arabia. The permit authorises the Umrah itself at a booked slot. Umrah visa holders also book permits.
